In September-October, the harvest in the garden ends and this is the right time to start preparing your summer cottage for the next season. Simple tips will help you know what needs to be done before frost and not miss anything.
Harvesting
In autumn, the harvesting of late varieties of apples and pears, the collection of chokeberries and remontant raspberries continue.
In the second ten days of September it was necessary to dig up potatoes, remove beets, carrots, and onions. Dry the vegetables well and take them to the cellar for winter storage.
In October, before the first frost, you need to cut or dig up late varieties of cabbage, depending on the method of preservation. Vegetables intended for harvesting can be left in the garden longer; for example, a slight frost has a positive effect on the quality of cabbage.
Clean up the area
After harvesting, it is necessary to clear the garden of fallen leaves and fallen fruit trees. Change the soil in the greenhouse or greenhouse. Clear the beds of tops and weeds, apply fertilizer containing phosphorus and potassium. In areas of the garden where the soil is heavy and clayey, add ash, sand, and compost.

Before the onset of cold weather in the first ten days of October, you can sow winter-hardy crops in the ground: carrots, onions, garlic, beets, radishes, spinach, dill, parsley. Cover the bed with suitable material from weathering: straw, spruce branches, peat.
Processing garden tools
All garden tools: rakes, hoes, shovels, pruning shears, prepare for the spring period. And for this, they must be cleaned, dried, lubricated with machine oil. Leave for the winter in a closed, dry room, pre-pack the tools in a waterproof material.
