Everyone's glasses, cups, or other glass items break from time to time. Even small fragments can cause serious injuries, so it is important to remove them quickly and thoroughly. The first step is to check that no one is injured and to remove children and pets. It is advisable to put on rubber shoes and only then start cleaning.
Broom and vacuum cleaner
First of all, remove large fragments immediately, after wearing gloves to protect your hands. The glass can be placed in a thick paper bag or wrapped in newspapers. This will help avoid accidental cuts when taking it to the trash.
Then the visible fragments are swept away with a broom. It happens that pieces of glass scatter within a radius of several meters, especially if a light bulb breaks. Therefore, it makes sense to carefully examine all hard-to-reach places and look in corners, near baseboards, under a bed, table, sofa or other furniture. To prevent splinters from remaining on the broom, the floor is sprinkled with either baby powder or baking soda.
After cleaning with a broom, a vacuum cleaner will help to collect the smallest fragments. Use a regular brush to vacuum the entire floor, and for hard-to-reach places use a vertical brush or flexible hose. If there is a risk of glass getting on upholstered furniture, it should also be vacuumed. There is no need to worry about the unit itself, the pieces of glass will not damage it, but immediately after cleaning, the garbage must be removed from the container or bag.

A dampened rag or paper towel will help pick up any debris left behind after cleaning with a broom. The floor should be wiped from the edges of the room to the center. It is important not to touch the bottom of the towel with your hands, so as not to injure your hand.
Another life hack is to use plasticine, bread crumb or raw dough, first make a ball out of it and roll it over the surface. All the little pieces of glass will stick to it.
Wide tape or adhesive tape is useful for cleaning both smooth floors and carpets. It needs to be glued to the area of contamination and pulled up so as not to lift the floor covering.
Carpet cleaning
The greatest danger comes from small glass fragments that are invisible in the thick pile. Therefore, carpets should be thoroughly cleaned. It can be done:
- using a vacuum cleaner;
- knock out the carpet on the street;
- use adhesive tape;
- remove the fragments with bread crumbs.
In order for the vacuum cleaner to be able to pull in all the fragments, you need a powerful stream of air. This can be achieved if you do not use attachments. It is advisable to run the vacuum cleaner over the carpet several times, and then throughout the entire room.
It is better to shake out a small carpet outside. To do this, you need to roll it with the front side inward (envelope or roll), take it out and beat it well on the wrong side. This will help prevent splinters from getting into your eyes.
Short-pile carpets can be cleaned well with adhesive tape or breadcrumbs. It is important to remember that you cannot clean the carpet with plasticine, as it may stick; it is better to use bread.
After cleaning the glass, it is advisable to wash the floor and walk indoors for a while in shoes with thick soles. If you follow safety precautions, broken glass can be easily removed without causing injury or scratches.
