It’s good if it’s also problem-free and doesn’t require attention. To get all this from the purchased boiler, you need to understand some characteristics before purchasing.
Heat exchanger design
This item determines what the boiler is intended for: heating only or completely providing the house with heat and hot water.
Single-circuit
A single-circuit boiler has, accordingly, one circuit for the passage of water through the combustion chamber. It only works for heating. To prepare hot water, you will need a separate water heater.
In addition to the burner and heat exchanger, the “composition” of a single-circuit boiler includes:
- a circulation pump that drives the coolant (prepared water or special liquid) in a circle (hot to the heating radiators, cool back to the heater);
- an expansion tank that protects the system from excessive pressure that occurs during thermal expansion of the liquid.
Most boilers in the middle and higher price categories are equipped with everything necessary (hardware and software) to work with an indirect heating boiler.
Dual-circuit
In these boilers, the second circuit is responsible for heating water for DHW needs. This is implemented in two ways:
- The bithermic heat exchanger is made on the principle of a coaxial pipe. The external circuit heats water for heating. Inside this circuit, there is a second circuit isolated - for DHW.This option is compact and lightweight. But there are a number of serious shortcomings. First, such a heat exchanger cannot be cleaned of scale. And a lot of it is formed. The second is the relative low productivity of hot water supply.
- Monothermic heat exchangers (separate) are 2 independent circuits. The heat exchanger, which is responsible for DHW (secondary), is heated not by the burner, but by the primary one. When the boiler needs to heat water for domestic hot water, the heating circuit is partially or completely closed and all the thermal energy (minus losses) from the primary heating element is transferred to the secondary one. This increases the speed of water preparation and heating temperature. The three-way valve is entirely responsible for the ability not to shut off the heating.
The primary heat exchanger in budget models is made of stainless steel, in expensive ones it is made of copper. Secondary heaters are produced only in steel versions. They need regular descaling. This is the weak point of boilers. True, replacement (in case of final failure) of this element is inexpensive compared to the cost of the boiler.
Burner design
Theoretically, there are 3 types of burners: single-stage, two-stage and modulating.
In single-stage ones, the valve opens and the burner operates at full power until it reaches a certain temperature. Then it turns off until it cools down to the lower cutoff. After which it turns on again.
In two-stage systems, the valve opens fully and the burner operates at maximum power, heating the system to a predetermined value. Afterwards, the gas valve partially closes, and the gas supply is within 40-50% of the maximum. The burner works to maintain heat.
The modulating burner is equipped with an automatic valve that can supply gas between 10-100%. The boiler power changes smoothly. This approach increases efficiency, reduces gas consumption, and increases the service life of the boiler.
Principle of operation
Engineers have developed 2 types of boilers: convection (traditional) and condensing. The former are simpler and cheaper, but they lose some of the heat from gas combustion. The efficiency of the latter exceeds 100%. But they are technically complex, more demanding to maintain and cost on average 30-50% more.
Convection
The burner is at the bottom. Above it there is a heat exchanger, which is heated by an open flame of the burner. Part of the thermal energy leaves the chimney, along with combustion products. The temperature of the exhaust gases reaches 120 degrees. The efficiency of such equipment is 91-94%.
On the plus side: in technical terms, implementing this operating principle is simple. And everything simple is reliable.
Condensation
Another additional heat exchanger has been added here. The energy from the exhaust gases is used to heat it. Condensate collects in it, the heat of which is reused. The burner is on top here. It turns out that the main heat exchanger is surrounded on top by a burner, and on the bottom by an additional heat aggregator. The efficiency of this type of boiler reaches 110%.
Since the additional heat exchanger works with condensate, it must be made of high-quality, corrosion-resistant materials. This increases the boiler in size and price. Carrying out preventive care in this case is more difficult, since access to the main nodes is complicated.
Such boilers are rarely produced in wall-mounted versions. They are bulky and heavy.
Dimensions and installation width
Overall dimensions depend on the power (burner size), the volume of the built-in expansion tank and the rationality of the layout of the components inside the housing. For domestic boilers with a power of 15-30 kW, the dimensions on average are in the range of 40-45 cm by 70-80 cm and a depth of 23-35 cm.
The boiler body, if it does not have additional thermal insulation, gets quite hot. Therefore, when installing it, it is necessary to provide some clearance. In some models, access to consumables and components is provided through the side panel. In this case, the gap is needed even more. The installation width is usually indicated in the instructions for the device. It is this value that must be taken into account when planning the location for installing the boiler.
Type of connection to the electrical network
All wall-mounted gas boilers are energy-dependent. In addition to connecting to the gas mains, they constantly need electricity to operate. The circulation pump, draft fan, electric valve actuators and all electronics operate from electricity. Boilers consume on average 120-150 W/h. To connect, they only need a single-phase 220 V network. The abundance of electronics requires protection from extreme surges in the network. Therefore, it is advisable to connect the equipment through a surge protector.
Control type
Options available: mechanical and electronic. Mechanical control is rarely installed in gas boilers, since there are too many control parameters; electronics cope with this task better.
Mechanical
More often, mechanical control means a control panel with mechanical rotary switches, with which you can regulate the temperature of the hot water supply and in the heating circuit. Then all processes occur in the same way as in devices of the second type.Therefore, choosing the type of switches is purely a matter of taste and personal preference.
Electronic
This is a more popular option. A panel with an LED display, neat buttons or touch keys looks more modern and stylish. The user also sets the boiler operating parameters, but here it becomes possible to make more subtle and precise adjustments and even programming.
Power
The power determines how much area the boiler can heat. It is calculated at the rate of 1 kW per 10 sq.m., plus a margin of 10-15%. That is, to heat an apartment of 120 sq.m. a 13-14 kW boiler is required. In double-circuit boilers, you can add another 10% for better quality (higher speed and temperature) of hot water. It’s not worth purchasing a boiler “for growth”. It is more expensive, consumes more energy, and can overheat, even stopping due to protective signals.
The combustion chamber
Combustion requires not only gas, but also air, and in sufficient quantities. Combustion products fill the space around the flame, but are already useless, “empty”. They must be withdrawn so that the fire does not go out. The design of the burner determines how the air flow to the flame is organized and combustion products are removed.
Atmospheric
Atmospheric boilers, also known as “with an open combustion chamber,” consume air directly from the room. Technological holes are provided in the housing for this purpose. Combustion products escape through a standard vertical chimney.
Boilers of this type are simpler in terms of design; they do not have forced draft or pressurization mechanisms. Therefore, they are lighter, more compact and cheaper. In addition, the simpler the device, the lower the likelihood of failure of some components and the system as a whole.
Disadvantages of atmospheric boilers: the burner becomes very dirty and needs regular cleaning, high requirements for ventilation in the room in which the boiler is installed.
Turbocharged
In this case, the combustion chamber is hermetically sealed. Combustion air enters through a coaxial or separate pipe, forced inside by a fan. Smoke is also removed forcibly through an internal pipe of a coaxial structure or through a separate chimney. It's convenient and safe. The location requirements for installing such a boiler are minimal. There are no harmful emissions into the room.
Such boilers are more expensive than open boilers, all other characteristics being equal. But they are more economical. Automatic synchronization of air and gas supply leads to complete combustion of the latter. The maximum is squeezed out of the gas. Under certain conditions (heated area, hot water consumption, seasonality of operation), purchasing a closed boiler turns out to be profitable in the long term.

A boiler is a serious device in terms of safety issues. Even the simplest models have a full range of equipment for safe operation. Therefore, additional functions are more likely to be responsible for operating comfort.
Settings and the ability to program allow you to organize heating and water supply with minimal resource consumption and maximum quality. So, in some models it will be possible to adjust the boiler by hour and even day of the week. You can turn down the heating while everyone is at work, and turn up the heat when the weather forecast predicts colder temperatures.
