Weeds in the garden are a problem that all gardeners face. Hateful weeds spoil the appearance of beds and flower beds, slow down the growth and development of plants, and worsen the quality of the harvest.
The fight against unwanted neighbors is carried out all year round. But special attention should be paid to the site in the spring.
Covering material or mulching
An effective way to combat weeds is mulching. A layer of mulch applied to the soil has a detrimental effect on weeds. Weed seeds and young seedlings are deprived of light and die.
Organic mulch can be used for surface soil covering: straw, sawdust, tree bark, peat, crushed stone and gravel. Geotextile and film are suitable as inorganic covering. A mandatory requirement for the covering material is a dark color. This type does not let in sunlight and is preferable for getting rid of weeds.
Green manure
Another way to get rid of weeds is green manure. Green manure is sown in free areas, between beds, under trees. These plants are characterized by intensive growth, good survival and lush greenery. "Green fertilizers" saturate the soil with nitrogen, oxygen and other nutrients, strengthen the soil and prevent weed growth.
Experienced gardeners recommend sowing green manure plants in the spring, as soon as the first snow melts. Green fertilizers are harvested several weeks before seedlings are planted. This method will allow young seedlings to quickly and easily take root, gain strength and begin to grow.
For spring green manure, alfalfa, oats, white mustard, sweet clover, legumes, and rapeseed are suitable.
Dumpless digging
Moldless tillage will solve the weed problem. It is recommended to dig up the soil extremely rarely. When the soil is turned over, seeds and parts of weeds lie in the deep layers of the earth and can spoil the crop for decades.
Therefore, it is recommended to loosen the soil using special equipment. With this method of treatment, weed seeds do not fall into the ground, remain on the surface and do not germinate.
Getting rid of unwanted neighbors in your garden beds is easy if you take the right actions at the right time. A neat and clean area pleases the owner’s eye.
