5 ways to disinfect the soil in a greenhouse in the fall

Autumn tillage in a greenhouse is a necessary agrotechnical technique. It will be the key to a good harvest next year.

The need for soil disinfection

During the gardening season, high temperatures and humidity prevail in the greenhouse. In such an environment, all life processes are very active. This applies not only to cultivated plants, but also to soil microorganisms and insects. Moreover, both useful and harmful. In the process of their vigorous and interconnected activity, the soil is greatly depleted. Harmful substances accumulate in the upper layer, where it is warm and humid. The causative agents of various diseases are also concentrated in the ground, on the walls, glass and frame of the greenhouse. Therefore, disinfection should be carried out at the end of each gardening season.

Methods for disinfecting soil in a greenhouse

There are 5 main methods of autumn tillage. All of them are carried out both individually and in combination, which is much more effective. The goal of all methods is to remove larvae of harmful insects, fungal spores and pathogens.

Soil replacement

The ideal method is to completely replace the soil to a depth of 20 cm. If this is not possible, then you should start with digging. Digging the soil is the basics. Without loosening and saturating with air, compacted soil cannot be processed sufficiently well.

Chemical method

The chemical method involves the use of solutions that can destroy pests. Most often, copper sulfate is used for this, which is diluted in a proportion of 50 grams of the substance per 10 liters of water. It can also be mixed with quicklime, or Bordeaux mixture. This will be a more effective mixture. But it requires great care and attention.

Attention! Copper sulfate should not be used more often than once every 5 years!

In addition, ready-made preparations containing copper sulfate, which are commercially available, are used. You need to act strictly following the dosages and instructions, because in the spring a new crop will grow in this greenhouse.

Thermal method

Hot water is poured onto freshly dug soil, in which all pests are on the surface. Soak it in boiling water three times and cover it with film to maintain the temperature.

Attention! This method can also destroy beneficial microflora in the soil.

Biological method

Disinfection is carried out using preparations containing biologically active compounds. The drugs Baikal-M1, Phytocid, Fitosporin and others are especially popular. This method has many advantages, because biologically active substances promote increased decomposition of plant residues in the soil, enriching it with humus.

The method of sowing green manure also belongs to the biological method. You can sow white mustard and vetch in the greenhouse. They contribute to the accumulation of nitrogen in the soil, improve the structure, and kill harmful microflora.

Treatment with infusions of marigolds, garlic, and calendula are traditional biological methods. They are not as effective, but are absolutely safe.

Cryogenic method

Cold treatment in winter is an important technique. Therefore, the greenhouse should be opened in winter during the most severe frosts.

Important! Polycarbonate greenhouses should not be left open unattended, they can be turned over or destroyed during strong winds.

Using all these methods in combination, you can guarantee yourself a good harvest in the greenhouse next season already in the fall.

In the spring, so much will get into the greenhouse with melt water again that all efforts in the fall will go down the drain. It is very stupid to throw snow into the greenhouse in winter! In the spring, the soil is already sufficiently moist.

  3. Olga

Why is it stupid to throw snow into the greenhouse? Where does the moisture come from after winter? You can also disinfect by freezing the soil without snow, and then the last snow - for moistening before planting ...

Bordeaux mixture is a mixture of an aqueous solution of copper sulfate (copper sulfate) and calcium hydroxide (slaked lime)

Vladimir, it’s immediately clear that he had nothing to do with polycarbonate

  6. Alexander

Is this how you should have taught physics at school? To kill pests in a cubic meter of soil with a bucket of boiling water.

  7. Galina

I absolutely agree with Alexander and Anonymous. In addition, copper sulfate can be applied to the soil no more than 1 g per 1 sq. m once every 5 years. It is better to spray the plants with Ordan. As for snow, this is a complex issue. Firstly, snow to moisten the soil of the greenhouse is good, since water freezes out of the soil. And secondly, everyone knows that plants covered with snow do not freeze. Therefore, if you want, for example, cutworms or other pests to freeze out, you do not need to throw snow into the greenhouse, let the soil freeze, and towards the end of winter you can throw more snow.

There is a debate here about the need for snow in a greenhouse. When we decided that in the spring we would move the heifer to another place, we did not throw snow on it. How they regretted it later! The soil after it was sharply different from the rest - dry, not soaked in any way by watering. Until the beds turned green, the 6 by 3 m rectangle stood out sharply against the background of the garden as a bright spot.

  9. Oleg

All this requires a lot of fuss, simpler - buy 1-2 sulfur bombs, set it on fire, close the greenhouse and forget!!!

  10. Anna

A sulfur bomb is, of course, good, but not in greenhouses with galvanized posts! They will oxidize and rust very quickly.

  11. Natalia

    Checker Baikal and green manure

  12. Natalia

The checker didn’t help, literally at all... Someone continues to bite my peppers and basil, but apparently it’s completely useless against viruses.Eggplants and tomatoes are sick with viral diseases, I don’t expect a harvest(

  13. Anatoly

and who treated it with potassium permanganate?

  14. Svetlana

A polycarbonate greenhouse can be treated with a tobacco shank; it does not damage metal structures

  15. Anonymous

In the spring, due to the melting of snow, you can’t enter the greenhouse, the water rises at shift 20, there is enough moisture. A sulfur bomb is yes, but the fact that the metal stands rust, nothing can be brushed and painted and,

  16. Alfia

Svetlana, tobacco checker will not help Ed, if you have serious illnesses
