“Overfed” seedlings: 3 tips for saving plants from the consequences

Fertilizers applied to the soil in large quantities can cause problems with seedlings and even their complete loss. Therefore, it is important to recognize the problem in time in order to quickly correct the situation.

Watering and replanting

At the first signs of oversaturation with fertilizers, stop feeding the seedlings. The soil is allowed to dry, then the plants are regularly watered with clean water.

If it is possible to carry out a transplant, then it is better to do so. The bushes should be carefully cleared of old soil and moved to new soil. In this case, you need to pay attention to the roots. If they are slightly rotten, replanting will help the seedlings recover. If the root system is completely damaged, replanting is useless.

Good lighting and moist air are also important - in suitable conditions, transplanted plants will be able to more easily endure the stress they have experienced.

If climatic conditions allow, seedlings are planted early in a permanent place (in a greenhouse) or containers with plants are taken out to the loggia.

Using Hydrogen Peroxide

A solution of hydrogen peroxide is suitable as first aid. It will destroy pathogenic microorganisms, cope with root rot, and improve root respiration.

A solution (2 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide per 1 liter of water) is poured onto the soil. In total, you can carry out 2-3 procedures - 1 watering every week.

The use of anti-stress adaptogens

Special means – anti-stress adaptogens – will help increase the strength of seedlings:

  • "Epin";
  • "Zircon";
  • "HB 101".

"Epin" is a stimulator of green mass growth. A solution is prepared from it (1 ml of product per 5 liters of water), which is used to spray the seedlings. "Epin" is allowed to be used once every 7-10 days. It is recommended to use the drug until the seedlings are completely restored.

"Zircon" helps plants grow a new root system. The solution (1 drop of the drug per 250 ml of water) is poured into the soil.

The products can be alternated: apply “Epin” once a week, and the next week apply “Zircon” to the soil once.

Another biostimulant is “HB 101”. The prepared solution (1–2 drops of the drug per 1 liter of water) is sprayed onto the seedlings once a week. Intended for long-term use, does not provide quick results.

Some gardeners replace ready-made anti-stress substances with natural remedies - a solution of honey or wood ash.

When fertilizing seedlings, you need to remember that eliminating the consequences of oversaturation is more difficult than coping with a lack of useful microelements. “Overfed” young plants will be able to recover if help was provided to them in a timely manner.
