Autumn is coming. At this time of year, all varieties of phlox bloom. It's time to start replanting them. Following planting specifications will help keep plants viable until spring.
Perennials are placed on a site on the sunny side with moist and loose soil at a distance of 40–60 centimeters and a depth of 17–20 centimeters. Fertilizers and lime are applied to the previously dug area (one glass per 1 square meter). It is recommended to treat phloxes before planting with root formation stimulants to make it possible to obtain additional sources of nutrition through strengthening the roots.
There are four most common mistakes that lead to plant death.
The deadlines for pruning for subsequent replanting were violated
Pruning is carried out only if flowering has completely stopped, when nutrients from the plant stems go down to the roots, which helps strengthen the phloxes for a safe winter in harsh conditions. For early varieties, pruning should be done in September, for later varieties - only in mid-autumn. Otherwise, the lack of nutrients in the roots will lead to the death of the plant.
Application of nitrogen-containing fertilizers
The nitrogen content in fertilizers promotes rapid growth and development of flowers. It would not be advisable to introduce them in the autumn, when phloxes are preparing for wintering.Stimulating the growth of new shoots will lead to a loss of the supply of substances, which will inevitably prevent the plants from overwintering comfortably and without risk to viability.
Very early covering or covering with inappropriate materials
Another risk for plants during planting and preparation for the upcoming low temperature conditions is violations during covering. Phloxes cannot be protected with additional materials until the onset of stable frosts and covered with dense materials that do not allow air to pass through. In these cases, the flowers simply wither and die.
No treatment for diseases
When planting plants in the fall, treatment with special preparations for various diseases - fungicides - plays an important role. The products will relieve phlox from fungal diseases.
Proper care, combined with proper planting, contributes to a favorable and comfortable wintering of phlox for further abundant flowering. Such perennials remain viable and full of nutrients.
