Planting roses is a responsible undertaking. The further development of the seedling depends on how competently the work was done. It is especially important to plant roses correctly in the fall. Violation of planting deadlines
Sometimes summer residents rush to buy discounted rose seedlings in order to plant them in the time remaining before winter. Late planting is permissible only for the southern regions. In the middle zone, the shrub should be planted no later than the end of September. In Siberia and the Urals, roses are planted in the second half of August.
The seedling must have time to take root in its permanent location before frost arrives. Plants that are not properly rooted will die in winter. Anyone who is tempted to buy a beautiful rose at a discount in October will have to winterize the plant in a basement or heated greenhouse. It will be possible to plant the bush in the ground with the onset of warm weather in the spring.
Improper preparation of seedlings
Rose seedlings can be sold with open or closed root systems. A plant purchased in a container can be planted without destroying the earthen ball if the roots are light and without signs of rot.
Another thing is seedlings with an open root system. They are often sold with the roots bent upward and wrapped in film. You should not immediately try to straighten the roots with your hands.Dried roots can break off, and this will become a big problem for the plant. The root system must be soaked in warm water for several hours.
The bulk of the roots will straighten out on their own. The remaining bent roots can be carefully helped. You should not act with force, if the root does not want to straighten, planting is carried out as is. Already in the ground, the root system itself will adjust its shape and direction of growth.
Roots that are too long can be shortened slightly; there is no need to trim the roots too much. What needs to be trimmed are the shoots. In polyanthus and hybrid tea roses, 2–3 buds are left. You can leave 1 more bud from the floribunda. Park, ground cover and climbing roses are not pruned before or after planting.
Choosing the wrong place
In autumn, most days are cloudy. When planting a rose, you need to take into account the illumination of the area in spring and midsummer. The culture does not do well in the sun.
In direct sunlight, the petals quickly fade and the flowering time is shortened. Also, roses should not be planted in low-lying areas where melt water accumulates in the spring. To plant shrubs, choose a flat area with protection from cold winds.
Failure to comply with landing rules
At the bottom of the pit, be sure to lay drainage made of expanded clay, broken brick or crushed stone. This will prevent excess moisture from accumulating in the root zone. Do not put fertilizer in the hole immediately before planting, otherwise the rose roots will get burned. Mineral fertilizers, compost or humus are mixed with soil and placed in the planting hole 2 weeks before planting the seedling.
The plant does not need excess fertilizer before wintering, so their dosage must be strictly observed. You can even reduce the rate a little, and with the arrival of warmer weather in the spring, add additional fertilizing. It is recommended to deepen the grafting site by 3–7 cm. The lighter and more breathable the soil, the more buried the planting can be.
Lack of care for planted roses
Autumn is inevitably accompanied by changes in day and night temperatures. Such conditions can adversely affect the seedling, so after planting the rose must be covered with loose soil.
During the rooting period, which lasts a month, it is necessary to monitor soil moisture. If the weather is dry, the plant is watered. With the arrival of the first frosts, it is necessary to build a shelter for the bushes for the winter. This is important for newly planted roses.
The plant is covered with a cardboard box, an inverted bucket, or a wooden box of a suitable size. You can build a frame from arcs and cover it with covering material. Inside the shelter there should be a loose layer of fallen leaves. Another option is to mulch the rose with dry peat and cover it with spruce branches on top.
A rose can grow in one place for many years, so it is important to choose the right place to plant it and follow all planting rules. The seedling must be in the ground a month before the arrival of frost so that the plant has time to take root. After planting the roses, they monitor the soil moisture, and before the onset of winter, they build a shelter.
