5 tricks for propagating roses from cuttings in the fall

Gardeners argue: is it worth rooting roses in the fall and, if so, how to do it correctly? Most people believe that autumn is the best time to grow a flower. To grow a plant pleasing to the eye from a cutting, you need to know some rules.

Not all roses lend themselves equally well to cuttings.

It is believed that cuttings are best tolerated by such types of roses as climbing, polyanthus and their hybrids, miniature, hybrid tea (not tea!) Roses of the Rosalind and Iceberg varieties are also successfully rooted by cuttings. Difficulties may arise with remontant, park and yellow roses.

Cuttings

Correct cutting of cuttings is carried out according to a certain algorithm. You will need a sharpened garden knife or pruning shears, which are disinfected and treated with boiling water. Cut into small pieces (4–5 buds per cutting), only healthy shoots, 4–5 mm in thickness. The top is cut 2–3 cm above the upper bud with an even cut, and in the lower part - at an angle under the lower bud.

Water first, not soil

Of course, no one forbids planting a rose immediately in prepared soil, but experts advise first germinating the cuttings in water, believing that this way they will take root better. Pour some water at room temperature into a small container and add a pinch of Fitosporin. Immerse the bottom cut into the solution, and only when the roots grow to 1 centimeter, the cutting is planted in the substrate. But long feeding shoots cannot be grown in water.

Transplanting cuttings into substrate

After the roots have sprouted in water, the rose can be planted in the ground. A drainage layer and some soil are poured into the pot, the shoot is planted in the center of the container and warm water is poured. The top of the pot is covered with some kind of container, plastic or glass jar to create a greenhouse effect and placed in a warm and sunny place. The planted rose is regularly watered, ventilated and prevented from direct exposure to ultraviolet rays.

Transplantation into open ground

Already rooted cuttings can be planted in open ground in the spring. To do this, dig a hole 20–30 cm deep in the area and fill it with peat and sand. Plant a cutting and loosen the soil around it. Water generously and cover with plastic or glass containers for the first time.

Cutting a rose in the fall is not such a difficult process if you approach it responsibly, having studied all the intricacies. Absolutely any gardener can handle this. With proper pruning, root germination and care after replanting, you will be able to plant a ready-made flower bush in the spring and delight your eyes.
