The tenderness and grace of wonderful roses leaves no one indifferent. Flower growers want to have more and more bushes of this flower in their garden. The most common method of propagating a prickly but beautiful plant is cuttings. It is important that this process be successful. It wouldn’t hurt for novice gardeners to learn the rules for growing roses from cuttings with their own hands, so as not to make mistakes.
The best time for cuttings
To obtain healthy bushes, it is better to plant cuttings in the summer. June - July is most suitable for this. The shoots should just harden slightly. It is not worth starting such a process earlier, because the substance inside the young stems will still be immature.
There is no need to be late with cuttings either. You should choose a moment when the buds have not yet awakened and the plant has not expended all its strength on them. It will be needed to form the root system. In summer, rooting and growth will be more intense. Some varieties take a long time to produce roots, and they do not seem to develop. These roses wake up in the fall.
What mistakes should you avoid?
Often inexperienced gardeners do not follow all the rules to achieve the desired result. Rooting may not occur due to the following errors:
- Incorrect cutting preparation. It is important to choose a stem that has just begun to grow woody. It is quite hard and greenish-brown in color. The workpiece must have three buds.
- Neglecting to soak the cuttings in a solution with “Kornevin” - a special means for better rooting.
- The buds on the stem have not ripened well. If you move the leaf away, the embryo should be clearly visible in the axil. It is necessary to select material that already contains fetal rudiments.
- Close arrangement of cuttings to each other. If the pieces are planted too close to each other, rotting will occur. It is important that the seedlings do not come into contact with neighbors and shelter.
- Rooting of imported varieties. Roses imported from other countries are often treated with preparations for long-term storage. They affect the awakening of the kidneys.
The process of cutting cuttings
When preparing planting material, you need to follow some rules:
- Choose a strong, healthy plant for propagation.
- The diameter of the stem for cuttings should be at least 0.5 cm. The ideal option would be the middle part of the shoot.
- The length of the blanks should be 20–25 cm.
- It is better to cut cuttings using garden pruners or sharp scissors.
- Cut the lower part of the scion at an angle of 45°, and the upper part - 90°. Make cuts at a distance of 2 cm from the buds.
- Remove all thorns and leaves from the workpieces, except for the top 2-3 leaves.
- Dip the cuttings into a solution with Kornevin for a day. This biologically active substance can also be replaced with aloe juice or natural honey diluted in water. It is enough to dilute one teaspoon of these products in a glass of water.
After all the above stages of cuttings, you should choose a rooting method. This can be done in soil, water, potatoes, a bag or newspaper. As soon as the cuttings take root, they can be planted in a permanent place.
Rooting in a package
A plastic bag is an affordable method for rooting roses. Place the cuttings prepared in the above manner in dark bags, prematurely filled with moistened substrate. You can moisten the soil with the same growth stimulator. The lower part of the workpieces must be in the ground.
The bag needs to be inflated, tied tightly and hung near a window or balcony. Thanks to the warm and humid microclimate inside the polyethylene, rapid root formation will begin. After about a month, the cuttings with roots can be removed from the bags and planted in open ground.
Growing in soil
Rooting of seedlings can be done directly in the garden. To do this, you will need to stock up on a special soil mixture. It should include nutritious soil and river sand. The summer period is most suitable for this, because the optimal temperature for germination is considered to be +20-26 °C.
Make holes in the prepared area and treat them with a solution of potassium permanganate. Place the cuttings into the holes at an angle of 45 °C so that the lower buds are in the ground. Cover with prepared substrate, water and cover with glass or plastic jars. From time to time, raise the shelters for ventilation and watering. After 1-1.5 months, the cans can be removed. Young shoots should appear from the buds.
Cuttings in potatoes
There is an original method of rooting in young potatoes. To begin, prepare the cuttings by removing the eyes from the potatoes. Choose a lighted and protected from the wind area for planting. Dig holes 15 cm deep. Pour a 5 cm layer of sand into them. Stick the cuttings into potatoes and plant them at a distance of 15 cm from each other. Cover the top of the seedlings with glass or plastic jars.
Potatoes contain many nutrients necessary for root growth. Such seedlings do not require additional fertilizer. After a few days, the planted scions should be watered and ventilated; this must be done regularly. Feed with sugar water once a week. Just add a spoonful of sugar to a glass of water.
Soaking in water
The simplest method is rooting in water. It is better to place each cutting in a separate container (plastic cup). Pour half of the settled water into it and place the shoot there. You can use water with added rooting agent.
Store the cups in a warm place out of direct sunlight. If the water evaporates, add new water. Even if the water becomes cloudy, it is not recommended to drain it completely. After about a month, small roots will appear on the cuttings. Wait until they grow to 2-3 cm and plant them in open ground.
Application of newspaper
For such an unusual method, you need to prepare sheets of newspaper, thoroughly moistened with water and wrung out. They need to be thoroughly soaked with water, but so as not to spread. Wrap the prepared shoots in them so that they are completely covered with newspaper. Place them in a black trash bag and tie them in a knot to create a greenhouse effect. Can be placed in another bag.
Keep cuttings in a cool place. After a week, change the newspapers or moisten them with water, and do this regularly. After a month, roots will appear at the ends of the shoots. The cuttings are ready for planting in a permanent place.
Roses can be capricious when cutting, so no method can provide a 100% guarantee. It's worth trying different methods. Diligence and perseverance will help you get a beautiful plant that will transform any flower bed.
