Growing roses from seeds is not the fastest propagation method, but it has several advantages. For professionals, this process begins in the garden, where they monitor the process of flowering and pollination, but for other gardeners, the first step is choosing a variety and purchasing seeds from the store.
Which varieties to choose
On the shelves of garden stores you can find various hybrids or polyanthus roses. By the way, the first rose that was actively grown from seeds was Angel Wings. But the plant is changeable. Some seeds produce beautiful bushes with double flowers, while others produce simple and small roses.
Suitable rose varieties:
- Crimean night.
- Burgund 81.
- Super Excelsa.
- Rose Gaujard.
- New Dawn.
- Morden Centennial.
- Super Dorothy.
- Rambling Rector.
- Lovely Meilland.
- Charles Austin.
- Snow Goose.
The seeds are placed in a clean container. To kill bacteria and fungal spores, add diluted bleach. The seeds are mixed and washed with bottled water. To further clean and disinfect the seeds, you need to place them in a container and add a little hydrogen peroxide, then rinse again with clean water. Treatment with 3% hydrogen peroxide for 24 hours should be sufficient. All floats must be removed as they may not be viable.
Soaking is done to ensure that the seeds germinate properly and do not become infected with any diseases.Do not mix bleach with hydrogen peroxide as this will cause a chemical reaction.
Before growing, seeds need to go through a period of stratification.
Cold treatment
Chilling in the refrigerator for six to ten weeks stimulates germination after planting.
You need to place the seeds on a paper towel before moistening them. You should then place them in a zip-lock plastic bag and label them with the date and variety before placing them in the refrigerator (in a compartment with a temperature of 1 to 3 degrees). The paper towel should remain damp throughout. From time to time you need to check whether it needs re-moisturizing. The towel should not freeze.
There are other ways to stratify, such as planting in a tray of potting mix and chilling the entire tray for a few weeks. The tray is placed in a plastic bag.
Landing
When the seeds are ready to plant (6-10 weeks), remove the bag from the refrigerator. For planting you will need trays or small pots.
You can use separate trays when planting different varieties of roses. Variety name and planting date are some of the details that should be included on trays or pots.
Then you should fill the trays or pots with soil for planting. You can use 50% sterile potting soil and 50% vermiculite or half peat moss and half perlite. When the mixture is ready, it is time to sprout.
After six weeks the first leaves will appear. Before the seedling is ready to transplant, it should have three to four leaves.
It takes at least three years before the seedlings reach maturity and become shrubs. However, the first flower can be seen the next year. Growing roses from seeds seems like a tedious process, but it is rewarded with the incredible beauty and aroma of these royal flowers.
I bought a packet of polyanthus rose seeds. I planted it as written on the bag (no different from yours), but I don’t know what kind of sprouts should appear. You should have posted a photo of the shoots. Out of 5 seeds, 2 sprouts emerged, and about a week later another one appeared.
