When you get up in the morning and open your closet with clothes in search of the right outfit, you want to feel the smell of cleanliness and freshness emanating from the clothes. But sometimes, instead, the smell of mustiness and stale things hits your nose. To prevent this from happening, you must follow some rules.

Storing things
- Try not to hang worn clothes next to clean ones. We are surrounded by germs everywhere, which begin to spread to fresh things if you hang worn ones nearby;
- You shouldn’t put the linen in the closet immediately after ironing. Let it cool;
- Be sure to dry your clothes completely after washing before storing them in the dressing room. Even the slightest humidity can cause the development of mold, and as a result, an unpleasant odor;
- From time to time, let the cabinets stand open, which will allow you to replace the stale air with fresh air. This is especially true for seasonal items. Before putting them away for storage, let them hang on the balcony or in the open air;
- In the summer, try to “fry” the washed items in the sun, and in the winter, hang them out in the cold. If only a few items of clothing smell bad, you can put them in the freezer for a while.
So what to do if this nuisance has settled in your wardrobe?! Of course, you can take your clothes to the dry cleaner, but you can try to get rid of the unpleasant smell on your own.
Ways to combat odor
- Soda. One of the main assistants in the kitchen will be useful this time too.This product helps to get rid not only of unpleasant odors, but also of various types of stains: grease, oil, juices. Take 1 liter of water, slightly bring to a boil (70-800C), add 5 teaspoons of soda. Mix everything thoroughly and pour the resulting solution onto your clothes for half an hour. After that, wash again. If you have a lot of clothes, then when washing, simply add 1 glass of soda to the washing powder.
- Vinegar. No less natural and effective remedy. First, you need to soak the necessary items with a 3% vinegar solution (for this, take 3 parts of water to 1 part of 9% acid), and then wash them in the washing machine with 1 cup of vinegar added to the powder.
- Various aromatic soaps are good for eliminating the musty smell. Place the bars on the shelves among your clothes and perhaps this will get rid of bad odors. But remember that after a month and a half the aroma will dry out, and then the bar of soap must be replaced.
- For lovers of citrus aromas, a method using tangerine, orange, and lemon peels is suitable. Take the zest of the fruit, dry it and place it among your clothes. To enhance the effect, you can stick several cloves into the crusts.
- Before washing, you can soak your clothes in a saline solution. Dissolve 3-4 tablespoons of salt in 1 liter of water, put things there and leave for 30-40 minutes, then wash as usual. If there are specific stains on your clothes, you can sprinkle table salt on them and rub them in, then wash them.
- Bags with herbs - sachet. You can buy it at the store, or you can cook it yourself. In the summer, stock up on aromatic and fragrant herbs (lavender, bay leaf, mint), dry them and put them in sewn linen bags.Such a bag will not only freshen the air in the closet, but will also prevent the appearance of moths.
What else you should pay attention to when there are foreign odors from clean clothes:
- Washing machine sealing ring. Bend back the edge of the ring and check for mold. If there is, then thoroughly wipe everything with the product you usually use to clean the bathroom and toilet. Rinse well. And try to either keep the washing machine door open after washing, or dry the rubber ring.
- Sometimes the furniture itself gives off an unpleasant odor. In this case, take out all the items, wipe the cabinet walls with a rag soaked in vinegar or vodka, and ventilate the cabinet well.
- To prevent the appearance of stale odors from clothes, you can use an iodine solution for prevention. Soak cotton wool in iodine and put it in the closet. Or pour it into a small container and place it on a shelf.
Whichever method you choose, it is very important to maintain personal hygiene and rules for storing clothes, and then an attack with an unpleasant odor will be easier to defeat.
