7 tips for choosing a food waste disposer for your kitchen

Food waste shredders are becoming increasingly popular among housewives. Installing them eliminates unpleasant odors in the kitchen and sticky stains from leaking garbage bags. But even before purchasing, it’s worth figuring out what exactly you need to pay attention to when choosing a disposer.

Power and volume

For a family of 3–5 people, a device with a power of up to 0.5 kW is quite suitable; larger figures are used in public canteens. Volume is no less important: a small unit is much more convenient, it will not take up much space under the sink. And this is especially true in small apartments with a small kitchen, where every centimeter counts.

Startup type

The device starts in mechanical or automatic mode. In the first case, you are supposed to use a button; for this you will have to make a hole in the countertop or sink. Automatic models are good because they start working immediately after the waste enters the sink opening.

For most users, the second option is more convenient, but such devices also cost an order of magnitude more.

Rotational speed

When choosing a food chopper, you should pay attention to the rotation speed of the discs. For food processing, a machine with a speed of 1400 rpm is quite suitable.

Lesser indicators will cope poorly with the task, the processing will be of poor quality, and more time will be spent on the process itself.

Anti-corrosion coating

The anti-corrosion composition that coats the parts ensures a longer service life. Treatment with a special compound allows the device to work even in the most extreme situations. For example, if there are impurities and heavy metals in the water.

Noisiness

Cheap devices produce loud noise within 70 dB, which is annoying and interferes with other activities. It is best to give preference to devices whose noise level does not exceed 40 dB. Then the disposer will operate in almost silent mode.

Parts Availability

Even before purchasing, you should make sure that the components of the device in the form of knives and graters are on sale. Otherwise, if the shredder breaks down, you may be left without parts, which means without the device as a whole.

Additional functions

This item is not required, but the presence of additional functions significantly simplifies the work process and makes using the device convenient. For example, a magnetic catcher will prevent the penetration of metal objects: spoons, forks. The reverse and rotation speed functions are also important; they allow you to customize the disposer for yourself.

Considering all the selection tips, you can choose the perfect food chopper. Only a correctly selected and correctly installed disposer will ensure long and trouble-free operation. Even outdated models last about 10–15 years.
