How to organize the storage of spices and herbs in the kitchen

Many people use spices when cooking, but not everyone knows how convenient it is, and most importantly, how to store them correctly. There are several tips on how to easily organize all the spices in the kitchen so that they do not lose their properties and at the same time fit harmoniously into the interior of the kitchen.

Storage rules

Spices should be stored in airtight containers, away from the stove and sunlight. Special jars are the best option, but plastic bags should be avoided. Some seasonings have unique features: for example, red pepper is recommended to be stored in the refrigerator.

Seasonings have different expiration dates: this should be taken into account and checked at least once a year.

Organization options can be divided into two groups.

What to store in

  1. Glass jars

The most common and practical storage option. You can choose from a variety of jar designs, from simple to hand-decorated.

  1. Packages

Despite the convenience, it is not recommended to store spices in bags for a long time: after opening, they lose their tightness and the seasonings lose their properties. You can also keep spices in canvas bags. However, if you put the opened bags in a container with a tight lid, there will be no problems.

  1. Plastic containers

The option partially follows from the previous paragraph. But you don’t have to pre-pack it in bags: you can choose containers of the right size. The choice is huge.

  1. Tin cans

The main advantage of tin jars over other methods is that they already protect spices from the sun, so there are no restrictions on storage location.

  1. Large spice jars

You can always buy special containers. They are usually conveniently rectangular or square in shape - a big plus compared to regular jars. They take up less space and fit neatly in drawers and on shelves.

  1. Test tubes

Test tubes are an unusual container, but they are interesting to fit into the interior. Not suitable for storing large quantities of seasonings, but they are convenient to store and pour. The main thing is not to forget to plug the test tube with a stopper.

Where to store

  1. Wall shelves

Jars of spices on the shelves above the work area will look neat. This way they will always be at hand while cooking.

  1. Drawers

Convenient and practical: easy to take out, and at the same time the spices are securely hidden both from sunlight and from prying eyes. Labels on the lids will help you quickly find the right seasoning.

  1. On cabinet doors

Many manufacturers picked up this idea. On the inside of the doors of kitchen cabinets, special pockets are made where many jars or containers can be placed.

  1. Hanging baskets

The slats are attached to the walls or ceiling, and hanging baskets or bags of seasonings on “hooks” are already attached to them.

  1. Special organizers for spices

Usually sold already in a set with spices.

  1. Magnetic walls

Magnetic boards or tapes are hung on the walls. They are great not only for organizing spices, but also for storing knives and other utensils. Jars are attached to them with magnets.

  1. Niche in the wall

For those who are just planning to renovate their kitchen, an option with a special shallow niche in the wall is suitable. It is easy to make from drywall of the right size to accommodate any number of spices.
