A rich harvest is the dream of many summer residents. People who are accustomed to spending the summer improving their garden plots and gardening are very sensitive to the plants they grow. In an effort to strengthen and protect planted vegetables, bushes and fruit trees from pests, summer residents resort to all sorts of tricks, including spending a lot of money on various fertilizers.
Benefits of fish waste
Ordinary waste that is not suitable for human consumption can become a highly effective fertilizer. Among them, special mention should be made of fish heads, bones and entrails.
Fish has long been valued for its high content of phosphorus, selenium, iodine, potassium and calcium, which is beneficial not only for the human body, but also for plants. Despite its not very pleasant appearance, fish waste has incomparable potential. Once in the soil, they begin to decompose and gradually saturate it with minerals that trees and shrubs need. But strong and healthy plants and, as a result, a high yield are not the only positive effects of such fertilizer. The smell of decaying fish will reliably repel a number of pests, in particular, it will protect the potato crop from moles.
Pure fish waste is suitable for feeding plants. In addition, the remaining fish bones and heads can be twisted in a meat grinder, and the resulting “minced meat” is already used for its intended purpose.
Alternative to fish waste
What to do if there is no such waste in the house? This situation may occur because not every family often eats fish. In this case, industrially produced fishmeal will come to the rescue. Its production takes place in several stages, which cannot be reproduced at home.
Also suitable for fertilizer are the remains of shrimp, crabs and other sea inhabitants.
Plant nutrition
You can feed plants at different stages of their development. When planting tomato or pepper seedlings in open ground, either a small fish or a tablespoon of minced fish is placed in the hole where the bush is placed. You should ensure that this fertilizer is located at a depth of at least 10 centimeters, since, having a strong and specific smell, it can attract the attention of neighboring cats. It is also necessary that the roots of the seedlings do not come into contact with the fish, and that there is a layer of earth between them. This feeding will make the root system and stem of the bush stronger, and the fruits will be large and juicy.
Potatoes are also fertilized during the planting process in the same way.
Such fertilizer is applied not only at the initial stage of growth. Fish waste infused in water is called fish emulsion. Shrubs are watered with it throughout the entire fruiting period.
Fertilizing the soil
Fish waste in the form of fertilizer can be applied not only directly under the plants. The soil is also fertilized for the future. It is enough to bury fish heads or tails in places where you plan to plant vegetables. Over time, the soil will absorb all the necessary minerals and trace elements.
