“Please sit down”: how to decorate chairs with a twist

Chairs are frequently used pieces of furniture. Soon they wear out, age and become unattractive. Smart furniture decor will help restore the former attractiveness of stools and breathe a second life into them. You can also decorate chairs before Birthday and New Year.

Fabric decor

If the color of the walls and furniture changes, the chairs no longer fit into the interior. It’s stupid to throw away quality items, so you can decorate them with fabric covers. The main thing is to choose a reliable material for the seat and back that matches the finish. Reinforced silk, jacquard, and tapestry are most suitable for decoration. First you need to check the structure for strength, clean the grooves with sandpaper, and fasten the parts together using furniture glue.

Fabric decoration methods:

• Covers. Measure the height of the backrest, length and width of the seat. The legs can be left untouched or the cover can be extended to the floor. Cut out fabric blanks, leave seam allowances, and sew the product on the reverse side. Unscrew the cover and put it on the chair.

• Patchwork quilt. It is also convenient to use the patchwork technique - collect many pieces of colored fabric and sew them onto the upholstery with a decorative seam. Thus, you get a mix of bright colored patches.

• Bows. A special festive element allows you to prepare furniture for the holiday without much effort. The bow is easy to tie in contrast with the main color of the covers.The decoration can be complemented with a brooch, pin or any other decor. Bouquets of wildflowers or fresh roses woven into a bow look elegant.

• Ribbons. The easiest way to decorate is to buy several chiffon or silk ribbons, arrange them according to shades and tie them with bows or knots. Select the colors of the ribbons to match the theme of the event, interior or time of year. Such decorations are also suitable for decorating outdoor stools.

Decoupage technique

The decoupage technique ensures that any thematic images and patterns can be applied to the back. To work, you need to paint the furniture and dry it. It is best to choose white color. On a light background, pictures look more impressive and bright. Apply the image from a napkin to the surface in steps:

1. Cut out the necessary elements from 3-layer napkins, leaving a margin of 3-4 mm along the edge.
2. Coat the surface with PVA glue diluted with water.
3. Immerse parts of the picture in a container of water for a couple of seconds, blot them and also coat them with glue.
4. Attach the picture to the place where the pattern will be, smooth it out and remove excess glue.
5. Paint the chair with diluted PVA according to the pattern, going beyond it throughout the entire seat.
6. After drying, cover the stool with two layers of matte or glossy varnish.
7. Leave to dry for 24 hours, preferably 2-3 days.

In this way, you can update not only chairs, but also benches, chests of drawers and stools.

Jute rope

The atmosphere of comfort and warmth in the apartment will be created by the decor of chairs made of thick rope - jute. This technique is especially suitable for decorating furniture before the New Year 2021, when eco-style in the interior is valued.

Step by step registration process:

1. Remove the old upholstery and wrap the frame with rope. Secure the edge of the jute to the inner surface of the leg or back with a nail or staple.
2. Wrap the furniture tightly with rope, attaching the turns to one another and to the surface with hot glue.
3. Secure the end of the rope in the same way.
4. For the seat, cut out a piece of fabric, fold the edges and pin it with a furniture stapler.

Drive decorative nails around the perimeter of the chair to secure the drapery.

Pillows

Cute and warm pillows can be made this way:

• Sew a cover from two plush blanks, stuff it with padding poly and insert a zipper. For convenience, sew on rubber bands to secure the furniture.

• Weave from thick yarn of one or two colors. This “mat” is easy to wash, it turns out warm and cozy.

• Pull on an old knitted scarf and secure with a stapler. The material can be used to decorate only the seat of the stool or the entire product.

Simple ways to decorate chairs in your home allow you to update your interior without the expense or hassle. Stylish covers will completely hide the scuffs of the frame, cute rugs and pillows will add coziness, and pictures will make the furniture original.
