Summer residents know how difficult it is to fight weeds and how much effort is spent to keep the area clean and tidy. Dryweed, a honey-bearing and medicinal plant in nature, turns out to be a serious problem in the garden. There are several ways, from the simplest to the most labor-intensive, but effective, to get rid of this intrusive weed.
Features of the weed
Moleweed is a very tenacious plant; if it is not disturbed, it can live up to 50 years. Its powerful roots go down to a depth of half a meter. Once on the site, the weed aggressively conquers new spaces. Growth occurs thanks to new buds that form on the root system and grow in different directions underground.
In addition, the moth reproduces by seeds. Flowering occurs from the summer solstice to mid-July. Up to several thousand small white fruits are formed on one plant.
Fighting this dangerous weed is not an easy task. If a mole appears on the site, then, first of all, you need to prevent it from spreading and try to get rid of it as quickly as possible.
Mowing
The most obvious method is constant mowing at the first appearance of new shoots. This will significantly reduce the vitality of the plant. Having lost its green mass involved in photosynthesis, it will not be able to feed the root system. New shoots will gradually stop forming, and over time the weed will die.However, the process is labor-intensive and quite lengthy. It can occupy the entire summer season.
Mulching
A simpler and at the same time useful method is mulching. Mulch fights weeds by blocking their access to sunlight and free spaces. At the same time, it enriches the soil with useful substances, forms an optimal microclimate for the root system of cultivated plants, and maintains the required level of humidity. Two types of coatings are used:
- organic - sawdust, tree bark, peat, hay and other natural bases;
- inorganic - gravel, sand, geotextiles, polyethylene and other non-woven materials.
Change in soil composition
For all its vitality, it is demanding on the chemical composition of the soil. The plant grows and develops best in acidic soils. There are several ways to alkalize the substrate.
- Sowing green manure. Phacelia and cereal crops reduce acidity levels and improve soil ventilation. In addition, oats, millet, and barley suppress the growth of weeds due to their branched roots.
- Liming. Reducing acidity is achieved by adding chalk, fluff or slaked lime to the soil in the fall, before deep digging.
- Adding dolomite flour. This powdered mineral fertilizer is used for a sanitizing effect in the spring two weeks before planting crops. It should be taken into account that the greater the degree of grinding of the drug, the faster the desired result will be.
- Adding wood ash. This method is only effective for re-deoxidizing the soil.
Soil improvement
A radical way to get rid of weed is the sod removal method. To do this you need to resort to the following algorithm:
- remove the top layer of soil;
- Place the dug out pieces of turf in one place with their roots up, close to each other;
- spill the formed layer with a concentrated solution of saltpeter or urea;
- cover with dark covering material.
To form compost from the removed turf, repeat the watering procedure weekly, covering it again each time.
In place of the removed soil, add fresh black soil.
Application of herbicides
The fastest way to get rid of weeds is to use chemicals. Treatment with herbicides is carried out 2-3 times per season, in spring or autumn before planting crops. To achieve maximum effect, it is recommended to mow and then treat the area with a pesticide. Spraying should be carried out in warm weather, without rain or wind, so that chemical vapors do not spread. Herbicides should be alternated so as not to cause addiction to the weed plant.
